Chapter 20.08 ELECTRICAL CODE
Section 20.08.080 Applicability to persons and entities.
1. Owner-occupants of single-family dwellings. The following work activities
are exempt from permit
and inspection requirements of this chapter:
a. Repair or replacement of existing
materials, such as:
(1) Receptacle outlets;
(2) Light fixtures;
(3) Light switches;
(4) Ceiling fans;
(5) Any similar existing fixture,
appliance or mechanism for which electrical supply wiring is
currently in place and the work consists merely of removing the existing fixture and installing a similar
new
fixture in the same location.
2. Owners and managers of rental dwellings. No work activities are exempt
from permit and inspection
requirements of this chapter.
a. Exception. An owner,
within a twelve month period, may repair or replace the following existing
fixtures, appliances or mechanisms for which electrical supply wiring is currently in place and the
work
consists only of removing the existing fixture and installing a similar new fixture in the same location:
(1) No more than three receptacle
outlets;
(2) No more than three light
fixtures;
(3) No more than three light
switches;
(4) No more than three ceiling
fans;
b. This section does not apply
to retrofitting projects or replacement of lighting systems.
3. Tenants of rental dwellings. No work activities are exempt from permit
and inspection requirements of
this chapter.
4. Owners and managers of commercial and industrial buildings. No work
activities are exempt from
permit and inspection requirements of this chapter.
a. Exception. An owner,
within a twelve month period, may repair or replace the following existing
fixtures, appliances or mechanisms for which electrical supply wiring is currently in place and the
work
consists only of removing the existing fixture and installing a similar new fixture in the same location:
(1) No more than
three receptacle outlets;
(2) No more than
three light fixtures;
(3) No more than
three light switches;
(4) No more than
three ceiling fans;
b. This section shall not be interpreted to allow unlicensed
persons to perform retrofitting projects or
replacement of lighting systems.
5. Tenants of commercial and industrial buildings. No
work activities are exempt from permit and
inspection requirements of this chapter.
6. Licensed and registered contractors. Licensed
electrical contractors may perform all electrical work
regulated by this chapter utilizing licensed master, journeyman and apprentice electricians. The
following
work activities are exempt from permit and inspection requirements of this chapter:
a. Repair or replacement of existing materials, such
as:
(1) No more than three receptacle
outlets;
(2) No more than three light
fixtures;
(3) No more than three light
switches;
(4) No more than three ceiling
fans;
(5) Any similar existing fixture,
appliance or mechanism for which electrical supply wiring is
currently in place and the work consists only of removing the existing fixture and installing a similar
new
fixture in the same location.
b. New installation of the following:
(1) Up to three new duplex receptacles;
(2) Up to three new light fixtures
and switches;
(3) Dedicated outlets and connection
of the following:
(A)
Range
(B)
Dryer
(C)
Water heater
(D)
Single-family residential furnace
(E)
Single-family residential central air conditioner
(F)
Single phase motors up to 10 hp
c. This section shall not be interpreted to allow retrofitting
projects or replacement of lighting systems
without the issuance of an electrical permit.
7. Manufacturers representatives are allowed to terminate wiring, test,
and start up equipment being
installed or modified.
