Chapter 20.08 ELECTRICAL CODE
Section 20.08.100 Standards for existing residential structures.
1. Existing electrical wiring in any structure containing one
or more dwelling units and any
accessory buildings may be metal clad cable (BX), grounded non-metallic sheath cable (Romex)
or knob and tube and will be approved where:
a. The wiring is properly installed
and additions have been made with methods approved by
the electrical ordinance and installation is not hazardous. In no case shall metal clad cable
(BX)
or non-metallic sheath cable (Romex) be spliced into knob and tube wiring;
b. The service shows no sign of overloading,
overfusing or tampering and is considered
adequate and can be disconnected with no more than six switches or six circuit breakers in one
location;
c. The service is properly grounded;
d. Minimum clearances for overhead
conductors are twelve feet above private residential
driveways and ten feet above accessible areas;
e. Tenants have access to their overcurrent
devices.
2. Electrical outlets (fixtures and receptacles) will be approved
in existing structures where:
a. There is a light provided in the
basement or cellar and in each separate room such as
toilet, fruit storage, furnace, laundry rooms, etc. Pendant or fixtures with exposed terminals
will
not be accepted and shall be removed or replaced if required;
b. The laundry area is equipped with
a grounded duplex receptacle;
c. All stairways are adequately illuminated. Stair lights shall be controlled so it will not be
necessary to use stairs in the dark;
d. Closet lights are at least eighteen
inches from combustible material. Exposed bulbs are
over an area which is unobstructed to the floor;
e. The existing duplex receptacles and
lights meet the following requirements:
(1) Kitchen
shall have a minimum of two duplex receptacles plus one ceiling or wall
light. One of the receptacles shall be clear of any stationary appliance and within two feet of the
counter top;
(2) Dining room
shall have a minimum of two duplex receptacles or one ceiling or wall
light and one duplex receptacle;
(3) Living room
shall have a minimum of two duplex receptacles;
(4) Bedrooms
and rooming units, hotel units and nursing units shall have a minimum of
two duplex receptacles or one ceiling or wall light and one duplex receptacle;
(5) Bathrooms
must have one wall or ceiling fixture operated by a wall switch.
Receptacles and metal fixtures, if any, shall be grounded;
(6) Hallways
are adequately illuminated;
(7) Improper
floor and Edison base receptacles, as well as Surfex or other surface type
nonmetallic switches, outlets and tap devices are not acceptable and must be removed or
