Section 4.84.170 Equipment.

 A body piercing establishment shall comply with the following requirement with regard to equipment used in the practice of body piercing:
    1. All instruments, needles, jewelry, that are used during the piercing procedure are required to be sterilized in sealed individual pouches..
    2. All gauze, q-tips, cotton, corks, rubber bands, tooth picks and related equipment to be used on an initial piercing, will be sterilized in sealed individual pouches or in bulk.
    3. Only a single use or disposable marking systems will be permitted for the marking of a piercing area.
    4. Reusable insertion tapers are permitted only if they are made of a surgical stainless steel and are sterilized between patrons.
    5. Body jewelry for initial piercing must be constructed of a minimum grade 316L F-138 surgical stainless steel, 316LVM F-138 implant grade surgical stainless steel, Grade 23 titanium, 6AL4V ELI F-136 implant grade titanium, 14k or 18k solid gold or pyrex glass, niobium, tygon, or platinum.
    6. Body jewelry with ends or beads containing silver, acrylic or any organic materials (wood, bone and stone.) shall not be used in an initial piercing.
    7. The establishment shall have proper equipment to accommodate, a client’ s request for privacy in that there shall be in place (or readily available a panel or other barrier of sufficient height and width to effectively separate the client from any unwanted observers or waiting patrons.  Panels or other barriers may be fixed, movable, rigid or flexible.
    8. Steam sterilization procedures shall be at 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius) for 15 min at a minimum pressure of 15 pounds per square inch.
    9. Dry-heat sterilization procedures shall not be used.
    10. Sterilizing equipment  shall be tested monthly with utilizing spores of B. subtilis bacteria. Records shall be maintained of the results of the tests for a period of twelve months.
    11. Each body piercing establishment shall maintain written procedures to follow in the event of positive spore tests; for example, materials processed in that sterilizer, dating from the sterilization cycle having the positive biological indicator to the next cycle showing satisfactory biologic indicator challenge results, must be considered non-sterile and must be reprocessed before being used.
    12. Each piercing station must be equipped with a container designated for disposal of used needles and other sharps. A written plan for disposal of these materials is required.
    13. Any bottles of solution shall be labeled as to contents and used according to manufacturer’ s directions.
    14. All equipment shall be maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.
    15. A stainless steel container containing a disinfectant solution is to be made available for every body piercing station, for temporary storage of contaminated tools before they are sterilized.
    16. Piercing guns shall only be used on the fleshy part of earlobe. (Ord. 2006-0831)
