Siouxland Marathon Brings Nearly $200,000 in Economic Impact to Sioux City
The Sioux City Sports Authority is proud to announce that the 7th Annual Siouxland Marathon, ran on October 17, 2009, generated $197,058 in local economic impact.* The Siouxland Marathon featured a full marathon, a half marathon and a marathon relay. Registered runners for the marathon totaled 187 with 312 runners participating in the half marathon. There were 53 teams in the marathon relay totaling 265 runners. Of the 764 total runners approximately half (382) were from out of town. These participants spent two days in Sioux City and spent an average of $257.93 per day. “The Siouxland Marathon grew by over 200 runners this year which is phenomenal,” said Corey Westra, President of the Sioux City Sports Authority. “The Sioux City Sports Authority added funding to the event this year for organizers to go out and attract more runners into Sioux City and that proved to be a great success.” “The success of this event is another example of our relationship with Missouri River Historical Development (MRHD),” added Westra. “The MRHD grant has helped us attract and grow sporting events here in Sioux City.” Along with the Sioux City Sports Authority other major sponsors of the event included SCHEELS and New Balance. Thomas Tisell from St. Paul, Minnesota was the winner of the men’s marathon in a time of 2:34.56, while Connie Prince–Houlihan from Sioux City won the women’s marathon in a time of 3:04.07. Greg Meister from Le Mars, Iowa won the men’s half-marathon with a time of 1:22.04, with Jennifer Viehrig from Omaha, Nebraska, winning the women’s half-marathon with a time of 1:29.04. A group of runners with Tyson from Pender, Nebraska, won the marathon relay with a time of 3:20.46. *Economic Impact totals based on the 2010 Iowa Tourism Guide.
