Gilchrist Learning Center Ribbon Cutting

The Sioux City Art Center will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, December 6 at 9 a.m. to mark the completion of the Gilchrist Learning Center. Remarks by Mayor Bob Scott, Art Center Director Al Harris-Fernandez, and other dignitaries will follow the ceremony.

The Learning Center honors the Gilchrist Foundation which provided a $1 million naming gift for the project. The Gilchrist Foundation was established by Jocelyn Gilchrist in December 1998 to honor her family and further their interests. The Sioux City-based Foundation has provided support for numerous non-profit organizations in the community, and has been a significant underwriter of special Art Center projects for more than ten years.

The new standalone Gilchrist Learning Center facility will allow the Art Center to increase public access to its education programs by expanding the number of classes and workshops offered, as well as the hours its programs are available to the public. In addition, the new Learning Center will expand and enhance the Art Center’s ongoing collaboration with the Sioux City Community Schools.

In addition to the naming gift from the Gilchrist Foundation, support for the project has come from more than 400 individual donations, including major support from Enhance Iowa, the Gardner Foundation, and the Gleeson, Chesterman and Persinger families.
