Council to Determine Fireworks Ordinance

Post Date:07/12/2017 3:46 PM

The City Council will determine the future of fireworks discharge in Sioux City. Neither the Code for the State of Iowa nor the Sioux City Municipal Code provide initiative or referendum power directly to citizens on this matter. Iowa Code Section 364.2(6) provides that a city council may by ordinance or resolution prohibit or limit the use of consumer fireworks, display fireworks, or novelties.

The City of Sioux City’s current ordinance allows fireworks discharge from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 25th to July 4th, with discharge an hour later on July 4th and the Saturday and Sunday preceding the holiday if within the use time period. Fireworks discharge is also legal December 30th, December 31st and January 1st from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., with discharge extended to 12:30 a.m. on January 1st and the Saturdays and Sundays immediately preceding January 1st if within the use time period.
