BNSF Railway bridge over the Big Sioux River
Crews will begin working in overnight shifts to replace the BNSF Railway bridge over the Big Sioux River starting Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Working around the clock will shorten the overall project timeline, which was delayed while awaiting federal permits.
The first stage of the overnight work will occur March 4 through April and then will resume during later construction phases to be determined. BNSF and its contractor, Ames Construction, understand the inconvenience with this overnight work and will minimize impact to the public to the extent possible.
Spans of the bridge failed after flooding on the Big Sioux River last year. The replacement bridge is estimated to be completed in July. We appreciate the cooperation of the cities of North Sioux City and Sioux City and the understanding of the communities, and we look forward to restoring rail service in the area later this summer.
For questions on the project, please contact Amy McBeth with BNSF at amy.mcbeth@bnsf.com or Adam Leitschuh at Ames at adamleitschuh@amesco.com.
