The Great American Read

Post Date:06/22/2018 11:45 AM

The quest to determine America’s most-loved novel sets the framework for Sioux City Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading program. PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) conducted a public opinion poll to narrow the list of top books down to 100 as part of a national campaign to discover America’s favorite book. The Library plans to spend the summer and fall seasons reading, voting, giving away prizes, and hosting events leading up to PBS’s Grand Finale show where the winner of The Great American Read will be announced.

“We’ve taken this national conversation about America’s favorite book and adapted our Adult Summer Reading program to it,” explained Kelsey Patterson, reader services specialist at the Sioux City Public Library. “We’re encouraging participants to not only read new books from the list, but also to vote as a book lover for their favorites. I think it’s going to be interesting when the results come in at the end of the campaign to see how Sioux City’s reading preferences line up with the rest of America.”

Great American Read handouts are available at each Sioux City Public Library location and include the complete list of the top 100 books. They also outline PBS’s voting methods and contain entry forms for the Library’s monthly literary prize bag giveaways. In October, the monthly entries will be combined into one grand prize drawing for a Samsung Tablet.

“This is an ‘at your own pace’ kind of program,” added Patterson. “Read the books you can throughout the program. The list you pick up from the Library is yours to keep and you can continue to work through the books you’d like to read even after America’s most-loved novel has been revealed. This list has certainly padded my own to-read list.”

The Library will announce additional events inspired by the national survey, and plans to host Facebook Live episodes that will dive into the discussions started by this PBS series. To stay on top of upcoming events, visit the Library’s Facebook page or website.
