Prairie Park Grand Opening

Post Date:10/05/2018 3:19 PM
The Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department would like to invite the public to the official opening of Prairie Park located at 3500 S. Lewis Boulevard on Thursday, October 18, 2018 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

“The Parks and Recreation staff have been working on this project for several years and we are proud of the outcome. We would to thank the Gilchrist Foundation, Rockwell Collins, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and US Fish and Wildlife Service for their support and funding assistance”, stated Matt Salvatore, Parks and Recreation Director. The focus of the development is prairie and habitat preservation, education, and recreation. Park improvements include a unique park shelter with a “living” green roof that will provide low-maintenance and long-term sustainability; a mulch walking trail with signage educating visitors about the regions native prairie and habitat, as well as, storm water purification. A windmill has been installed to aid in sustaining the fish species that are supplied by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in the on-site lagoons. The location will be open to the public for fishing. Fishing licenses and permits are available online at www.iowadnr.gov, by calling 1-800-367-1188, or purchased at over 800 retail outlets.

The park opening is a community event. Residents, visitors, and student groups are encouraged to attend. For more information contact the Parks and Recreation office at 712-279-6126.
