Sioux City Public Library’s Morningside Branch Renovation

Post Date:10/09/2018 3:35 PM

Sioux City Public Library’s Morningside Branch, located at 4005 Morningside Ave., will look different in the spring of 2019. A construction contract was awarded to Wegher Construction Co. at the City Council meeting Monday for the renovation of the branch.

Construction is scheduled to begin on October 15, starting with a new roof for the facility. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems are all operating beyond their useful lifespan and deemed critical improvements according to a building assessment performed in 2016, and will also be replaced.

In addition to new paint, carpet, shelving, and furnishings, the floor plan will feature a more defined computer lab and an expanded children’s area with interactive and sensory walls and toys. A kitchenette will be added to the Garretson Hall community meeting space, and the Library is pleased to be able to include the addition of a small study room and small conference room, a top request from Library patrons. The branch is expected to reopen in May of 2019.

“The space is being redefined and made more functional,” said Jenn Delperdang, Morningside Branch Supervisor. “The renovation is going to remove the limitations that the building in its current condition imposes. We’re thrilled that the City is choosing to invest in library services.”

Through a capital improvement project, the City of Sioux City committed $1 million to the renovation with the Library raising the difference. Wehger’s bid, $1,036,490, is the cost of critical and major improvements to the facility. Additional updates and furnishing will add an estimated $200,000 to the total cost of the renovation, which the Library has funded through donations and grants.

The Morningside Branch Library welcomed over 66,000 visitors this last year. While the branch location will be temporarily closed to the public throughout the renovation, Library users can enjoy continued Library service and after-hours book drops at both the Aalfs Downtown Library and Perry Creek Branch Library. Starting October 20 and throughout the renovation, Perry Creek will add new Saturday hours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
