Parking Meter Cash Keys Discontinued

Post Date:02/05/2019 9:03 AM

For many years, the City of Sioux City has offered parking customers the convenient parking meter cash key (image below).  Unfortunately, that convenience is soon to end.  Cash keys are no longer available and the cash key receptacles in the parking meters are also discontinued.  The software to load cash keys is aged and has outlived its life expectancy.  Effective immediately, cash keys will no longer be filled.

If you have a cash key that is not worn out and it is able to be read on the software, City staff suggest you turn your cash key in for a refund of any monies left on it.  You may bring your cash key to Customer Service, 1st floor, City Hall.  If the cash key is not able to be read, unfortunately we cannot issue you a refund.  The software to read cash keys will be discontinued as of June 30, 2019, unless it expires sooner.

The cash key can continue to be used on parking meters that have the cash key receptacle in them.  As cash key receptacles fail, the hole will be plugged and you will not be able to use your cash key at that parking meter.  Parking meters can still be paid with coins (quarters, dimes, and nickels).

The City also offers the ease of the Parkmobile mobile payment system.  To access Parkmobile’s mobile payment system, customers register online at or download the mobile app in their phone’s app store. Once registered, they may use the mobile app, internet, or a toll-free number to pay for parking.  After setting up their account, customers can immediately start using the system with their registered mobile phone. Enforcement officers will be able to see that a motorist has paid with Parkmobile using a wireless handheld device, so customers should not worry if the meter does not change. Mobile app users may also choose to receive alerts and reminders 15 minutes prior to the expiration of their parking session. Time limits on meters still apply and Parkmobile will not allow users to purchase more time than allotted by the meters.  When using Parkmobile, the license plate on the vehicle in the parking stall must match the license plate entered in Parkmobile.
