Art Center Exhibition Celebrates Youth Art Month

Post Date:02/15/2019 11:36 AM

Celebrating Youth Art Month, the Sioux City Art Center will feature its 30th Annual Juried Youth Art Month Exhibition: High School Students from February 16 – April 14, 2019. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Sunday, February 17 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mayor Bob Scott, Sioux City Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman, Art Center Director Al Harris-Fernandez and Education Coordinator Debra Marqusee, will present awards at 2 p.m.

Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual, nation-wide observance celebrating art education for children and encourages public support for quality school art programs. Designated in 1961, YAM began as Children’s Art Month to emphasize the value of all children participating in art.

The Art Center believes art plays a significant role in every student’s development and recognizes, encourages, and applauds these fine young artists. The Art Center thanks area art teachers for their dedication to student artistic development and their support of this exhibition.

Twenty-four high school art teachers from nineteen schools in the tri-state area submitted 548 entries. Ninety-seven pieces of art were selected by juror, Jeff Baldus, Associate Professor of Art, Briar Cliff University and Art Center Director, Al Harris-Fernandez. The artworks were judged on originality, creativity, personal expression, and excellence of workmanship.

The Youth Art Month exhibition is sponsored in part by Wells Fargo Bank Sioux City.
