Art Center Opens Sioux City Art Center Select Exhibition

Post Date:03/15/2019 11:51 AM
The Sioux City Art Center is pleased to return to one of its most popular recent projects, Sioux City Art Center Selects. The exhibition opens with a free public reception on Friday evening, March 22, 5:00-7:00pm.  A special program, The Artist Experience, will take place the next day, 10:30am-3:30pm, featuring presentations by all participating artists. The exhibition remains on display through June 23, 2019.

Selects is a regional juried exhibition, open to all artists in Iowa, as well artists living within 300 miles of Sioux City. Artists submitted a body of work, which was judged by the overall quality of the artworks and by the clarity and consistency of the body of work. The Art Center’s director, Al Harris-Fernandez, and curator, Todd Behrens, selected 8 artists from the 123 artists who applied. After visiting each artist’s studio, Behrens worked with the artist to select a body of work to bring to the Art Center for this exhibition.

The 8 artists selected for this exhibition are:
Marcus Cain, Kansas City, MO (painting); Matt Drissell, Sioux Center, IA (mixed media drawing); Barbara Federer, Waverly, IA (drawing); Benjamin Gardner, Des Moines, IA (painting); Karen Gustafson, Minneapolis, MN (textile drawing); Kristine Heykants, Minneapolis, MN (photography); Andrew Kosten, Brookings, SD (printmaking); Cathy Palmer, Sioux City, IA (painting).

At the free preview reception on March 22, the artists will speak briefly about their work. On March 23, the public is invited to attend a free program, The Artist Experience, to learn more from the artists. During this daylong program, the artists will give more extensive presentations on the development of their work and careers. The program will also include a round-table conversation with the artists about the development of their ideas and styles, and how that development has translated into artistic and professional success.

The Artist Experience is made possible thanks to grant funding from the Iowa Arts Council.
