|Human Rights Commission|
The Human Rights Commission enforces local, state and federal anti-discrimination laws. It also works to prevent and eliminate discrimination in our community. The following are the protected classes: race, color, religion, creed, sex, nation origin, age, marital status (in credit), families with children (in housing), mental or physical disability, actual or perceived sexual orientation, and gender identity. The areas covered are employment, housing, public accommodations, education or credit. Click here to be directed to the Human Rights Department website.
Effective January 1, 2012, Section 69.16A of the Iowa Code requires gender balance on those City Boards and Commissions required or governed by state law unless the City has made a good faith effort for a period of three months to appoint a qualified person. This affects and includes the Civil Service Commission, Human Rights Commission, Library Board of Trustees, and Planning and Zoning Commission.
