The City Clerk's Office processes the licenses and permits listed below. Review the corresponding chapters of City Municipal Code for more information. For questions or to request an application, please contact the City Clerk's Office.
Adult Oriented Business: Licenses should be renewed annually and have an annual fee of $175. Review Municipal Code Chapter 4.75. for more information and application requirements.
After-Hours Clubs: A club or gathering place which regularly operates between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. whose apparent primary purpose is entertainment, social gathering, dancing, live or recorded music, or playing games of skill or chance. Licenses should be renewed annually and have an annual fee of $175. Review Municipal Code Chapter 4.86. for more information and application requirements.
Alcohol License Applications are completed online with the Iowa Department of Revenue. After completing the state application, contact Dani Bock, Deputy City Clerk, for more information.
Auctioneer: Anyone who sells goods at public auction for another or for himself. Licenses expire on December 31 after the date of issuance and have an annual fee of $70. Review Chapter 4.28. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Body Piercing Artist: Person who, gratuitously or for a fee, practices body piercing. Licenses expire on June 30 after the date of issuance and have an annual fee of $40. Review Municipal Code Chapter 4.84. for more information and application requirements.
Body Piercing Business: A business practicing body piercing. Licenses should be renewed annually and have an annual fee of $100. Review Municipal Code Chapter 4.84. for more information and application requirements.
Carnival, Circus, Exhibition, or Show: The operator or sponsor of a circus, carnival, exhibition or show shall obtain a license for operation of such event. Fees vary dependent upon the type and length of event. Review Chapter 4.14. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Cigarette/Tobacco/Nicotine/Vapor Permit and Device Retailer Permit Applications are completed online with the Iowa Department of Revenue. After completing the state application, contact Dani Bock, Deputy City Clerk, for more information.
Horse-Drawn Carriage: Vehicles operated or pulled by a horse which may be hired for the transportation of passengers. Licenses expire on December 31 after the date of issuance and have an annual fee of $65. Review Chapter 4.66. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Pawnbrokers and Dealers in Precious Metals or Precious Gems: Licenses expire on December 31 after the date of issuance. Annual fees are determined by average transactions. Review Chapter 4.48. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Pet Licensing (Dogs and Cats): A license is required for all dogs and cats over six months of age. Licenses expire on December 31 after the date of issuance and should be renewed annually. Review Chapter7 of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Salvage Operators: Person operating a yard, lot or place, outdoors or in an enclosed building, containing salvage or junk upon which occurs one or more acts of: buying, storage, dismantling, processing, recycling, selling, or offering any such salvage, in whole units or by parts, for a business of commercial purpose. Licenses expire on December 31 after the date of issuance and have an annual fee of $140. Review Chapter 4.44. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Theaters, Motion Pictures, and Shows: A license is required for a person, firm or corporation directing, managing, exhibiting, producing or displaying any theater, theatrical exhibition, moving picture shows, or other exhibition of any kind. License fees are prorated on a quarterly basis, and the license shall expire on December 31 annually. Review Chapter 4.24. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
Transient Merchant: Any person intending to remain in business in the city for less than one year who offers for sale tangible personal property or personal services; or takes or attempts to take orders for the sale of tangible personal property, advertising, subscriptions, or services to be furnished or performed in the future. All license fees shall be prorated on a quarterly basis, and annual licenses shall expire December 31 of each year. Transient Merchant Blanket: The owner or person in control of any real property in the city, upon which a permanent business and building is located, or any person using public property with the consent of the city, who conducts events, or leases the premises to transient merchants for regulated events, may procure a blanket annual license. All license fees shall be prorated on a quarterly basis, and annual licenses shall expire December 31 of each year. Vehicle for Hire Company: A person, business, firm, partnership, association, or corporation, that offers vehicle transportation services for hire by means of a taxicab, limousine, modified transportation vehicle, or trolley bus. Certificates expire on December 31 after the date of issuance and have an annual fee of $45. Review Chapter 4.64. of the Municipal Code for more information and application requirements.
