Sioux City Growing Green

What do I do with...?

Items in good, usable condition can be donated to the Discovery Shop, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Gospel Mission, MOM’s Thrift, or another second hand or thrift shop.

Appliances: Appliances can be recycled at the Citizens Convenience Center* for a small fee.

Batteries: Car batteries and rechargeable batteries may be recycled at Bomgaars, Home Depot, Interstate Battery, Batteries Plus, and Lowe’s. Call ahead for the types accepted. Batteries may also be taken to the CCC* for a small fee.

Books: The Friends of the Library holds a huge book sale every spring. Books left at any Sioux City library location will be sold, and proceeds benefit library patrons and programs.

Christmas trees may be placed curbside and will be collected during the first two weeks of January on your regular collection day.

Electronics: Electronics (including televisions) may be recycled for $.25/lb at the Citizens Convenience Center*. Staples accepts computers and most office equipment free of charge, and Best Buy accepts many consumer electronics free of charge (search “Best Buy recycling” for their list).

Fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs: These contain a small amount of mercury and cannot be placed in your regular garbage. Instead, take them to Home Depot, Lowe’s, Batteries Plus, or the CCC* for recycling. Virtually all of the material in a CFL is recyclable.

Furniture and bulky items: Furniture and bulky items can be taken to the CCC*, or arrange pickup by a waste hauler (see "Garbage & Rubbish Collection" in the yellow pages).

Glass: Purple bins are at Hy-Vee (2827 Hamilton Blvd., 4500 Sergeant Rd., 3301 Gordon Dr.) and Fareway (4040 War Eagle Dr., 4016 Indian Hills Dr.), and downtown at the Long Lines Family Rec Center parking lot. Lids must be removed; no need to remove labels. More information on the program can be found here

Household & Yard chemicals: These can be recycled, reused, or disposed of properly at the CCC* for free. An appointment is required: 712.255.8345.

Paints & Stains: These can be recycled, reused, or disposed of properly at the CCC* for free. An appointment is required: 712.255.8345.

Plastic bags and films: Plastic bags and films can be tied up securely in another bag and placed in curbside recycling. Write “Plastic” on the bag so the hand sorters can identify it easier. Most grocery stores accept plastic bags and films as well. Please remove labels.

Prescription Drugs: Do not flush unused medicines. Wastewater facilities are not equipped to filter these out, so pharmaceuticals can be released into our waterways and may cause ecological harm. Prescription drugs may be returned to your local pharmacy for proper disposal. Controlled substances can be deposited at the secure drop box in the Sioux City Police Department’s lobby (601 Douglas St). Drug Take Back events are held in multiple locations throughout the year as well.

Tires: Tires can be taken to the CCC*. Cost is $4 if no rim; $6 if on a rim.

* “CCC” or Citizens Convenience Center: 5800 28th Street in Sioux City. Ph. 712-255-8345.
