Sioux City Fire Rescue is aggressively working to diversify through our hiring process.  We know that a department that reflects our community will best serve all citizens.  We are seeking qualified candidates to apply and test to become eligible for hire. Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Not be a alcohol or drug addict.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain, prior to hire, a valid driver’s license.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the entrance civil service examination, and no greater than 38 years of age at the time of the entrance civil service examination.
  • Applicant must pass all phases of the hiring process designated by the Rules of the Civil Service Board.
  • Must provide verification of certification as a State of Iowa or Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the time of a conditional offer by the Fire Chief.
  • Be in good physical condition and be able to participate in a physically agility test.
  • If a Veteran is interested in receiving Veterans' preference points, he or she must present a copy of discharge papers.
  • Be available to have fingerprints taken.

The Hiring Process:

  • Sioux City Fire Rescue holds an entrance examination for firefighter every two years.
  • Written Civil Service Examination administered. Applicant must have a passing score to move to the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) administered.  Applicant must pass the CPAT in order to progress.
  • Oral interview conducted. Applicant must have a passing score on the Oral Interview to progress.
  • Candidate is placed on a Conditional Firefighter Entry List which is valid for two years.
  • Conditional job offers will be made by Sioux City Fire Rescue's Fire Chief based on available positions.  After a conditional job offer, candidates will go through a background check, medical examination, and drug and alcohol screening.
  • All applicants who are selected for hiring must successfully complete a 12-month probationary period. During the probationary period, an on-going structured training program will be provided, along with monthly performance evaluations.
