WHY DO WE NEED A PLAN?
The City of Sioux City needs improved infrastructure within the downtown area to meet the growing needs of the community.
• Various watermains throughout downtown have broken multiple times over the past five years, resulting in extensive repairs and impacting the community.
• Additionally, the underground sewer and storm sewer systems are aging and have areas in need of repair or replacement.
• Overall, it is estimated that the combined replacement value of just the water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure is well over $25 million. Due to the high investment costs for construction it is important these projects are coordinated with both private development and other infrastructure needs such as roads and private utilities.
PROJECT AREA - DOWNTOWN SIOUX CITY
THE PROCESS
The city developed a downtown infrastructure reconstruction master plan in 2022-2023 to identify and prioritize the repair and replacement needs of the utility infrastructure in Downtown Sioux City. The planning area covers approximately 126 blocks from Wesley Parkway to Floyd Boulevard, and from Gordon Drive to 8th Street. The project engaged multiple stakeholders within the downtown community to understand development forecasts, private utility plans, and align with downtown planning efforts. Construction of identified improvement projects will be determined based on available funding.
