City of Sioux City Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project

The City of Sioux City developed a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Facility Plan to evaluate current and long-term needs for wastewater treatment for the City of Sioux City, its sister cities, and industrial and commercial dischargers. The plan prioritized, evaluated, and identified cost-effective options for the city’s wastewater treatment capacity, operation, and sustainability needs over the next 30 years.

The City determined that the most cost-effective option is to upgrade and partially rebuild the City’s WWTP on its current site and is moving forward with a phased project. The WWTP is currently at capacity and has aging infrastructure, which means that its operation is not sustainable in its current condition. Inaction is not an option.

Modernizing and rebuilding the WWTP will mean the City can manage more wastewater, so there will be more opportunity for community, commercial, and industrial growth and development, allowing Sioux City to thrive.

Rebuilding and upgrading the WWTP will:

  • Save ratepayers the hundreds of millions of additional dollars it would cost to build a new facility at a different location
  • Include significant investment in controlling odors from the WWTP and its pumping stations
  • Enable the City to stay in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state regulations
  • Allow the City to focus more attention at the WWTP on production of renewable fuels (biogas) and manage other beneficial projects
  • Provide environmental and recreational benefits, including helping to protect and maintain the quality of the water in the Missouri River
