Art Center Announces Opening of
New Blockbuster Exhibition
Michael Dunbar Sculptures
The Sioux City Art Center is pleased to announce the launch of the latest in its series of Blockbuster exhibitions, Michael Dunbar Sculptures. Mr. Dunbar has been one of the Midwest’s most respected sculptors for over thirty years. His sculptures are distinguished by their impeccable craftsmanship and their ability to connect to a wide range of ideas related to exploration. Many have found references to historic nautical instruments, Space Age satellites, and other scientific devices—all carefully crafted with the precision of fine timepieces.
As the Art Center prepares to install Michael Dunbar’s masterpiece, the 14’-tall Touched by the Sun, to its front lawn in August, it celebrates this sculpture’s important place in Mr. Dunbar’s career by presenting this exhibition of his “Machinist Studies.” Throughout his career as an outdoor sculptor, Mr. Dunbar has created these intimate sculptures, allowing viewers to admire the beauty of his sculptures on a scale and in an environment that accentuates their connections to historic artifacts.
The exhibition opens to the public on July 13 and continues through October 13, 2013. The public is invited to attend a free opening reception for this exhibition on Saturday, July 13, 5:00-7:30pm. Mr. Dunbar will be in attendance and will give a presentation on his career at 6:00pm in the Art Center’s Stark Lecture Hall.
This exhibition is the seventh major show, including Leonardo da Vinci: Man Inventor Genius & Man Artist Genius, Becoming a Nation: Americana from the Diplomatic Reception Rooms U. S. Department of State, Bikes: Motorcycles as Personal Expression, and Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession—Sculpture from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, to have been brought to the Art Center through the generous financial support of the individuals and businesses who make up the Blockbuster Partners.
