New Programming at ISU Design West
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — A new program that will allow Siouxland students to complete coursework at Iowa State University Design West and Western Iowa Tech Community College before transferring to the ISU campus in Ames is the topic of a March 17 news conference.
The ISU College of Design and Western Iowa Tech are developing an articulation agreement that would allow students to take classes in the College of Design’s first-year foundation program — the Core Design Program — at ISU Design West and complete general education requirements at WITCC. Students could then apply to the College of Design’s professional degree programs after a minimum of one year of coursework or upon completion of an Associate of Arts degree at WITCC.
Under the proposal, the College of Design will offer Design Studies 102: Design Studio in fall 2017 and Design Studies 131: Design Representation in spring 2018 at Design West. These courses will be taught by Iowa State faculty members on site in Sioux City. Two other Core Design Program classes — Design Studies 183: Design Cultures and Design Studies 115: Design Collaborative Seminar — will be offered via distance education.
“When finalized, the agreement will make it easier for students to complete an Iowa State degree while minimizing the time required to be in Ames,” said Cameron Campbell, ISU College of Design associate dean for academic programs. “We are excited to have dedicated faculty offer the coursework at the Design West facility and grow our connections with the community.”
Campbell and Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez will represent the College of Design at the news conference.
“We know students and their families are making choices right now about going to college and where to apply, and we want to let them know about this new opportunity,” Campbell said.
The decision to offer Core Design Program classes at ISU Design West is the result of interaction between the ISU College of Design and the , a collaboration of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and the two community colleges in northwest Iowa — Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon and WITCC.
